Golden Cock

The Cock of the Hubits

Landing at Fermain Day in 1338, Prince Madoc of Gwynedd in Wales fought and won a battle at Mare Mado in Les Hubits against John de la Marsh, captain of the Saint Martin parish feudal levy and occupied the Island for a short time.

A legend survives that soon after the battle, a saint Martinais by the name of de Putrainee offered Madoc a bantam cock that would lay golden eggs if he would leave the Island in peace.

The bribe accepted Prince Madoc sailed away with his plunder and thenceforward the head of the de Putrainee or de Putron family is always referred to as ‘le Coq es Hubits’ (the Cock of the Hubits). At this time another brother of the de Putrons was the feudal chief of the Island (see Royal Court records).

Long before Columbus, Madoc was supposed to have discovered America and been an ancestor of a group of light-skinned, Welsh speaking Indians in the American West.
